Bob Knight passed away at the age of 83 on Wednesday, his family reported. Knight was one of college basketball’s most successful coaches and one of the sport’s most divisive figures.

The guy who most famously coached Indiana University from 1971 to 2000 and won three national titles there—among them, one in 1976 with the team that became the most recent men’s Division I team to go undefeated—had his cause of death withheld from the family right away.
Knight’s family reported on his website that he passed away at his Bloomington, Indiana, home in the company of his loved ones.
The message says, “Today and forever, we will celebrate his life and remember him as a beloved Husband, Father, Coach, and Friend.”
Knight won a then-record 902 NCAA Division I men’s games before retiring in 2008. After two productive years at Texas Tech University and the US Military Academy, Knight completed his 29 seasons in Bloomington.

Knight was raised in Orrville, Ohio, after being born in the Ohio town of Massillon in 1940. He started at Orrville High School in organized basketball. In 1958, Knight continued to play for Basketball Hall of Fame coach Fred Taylor at Ohio State.
Even though he was a standout player in high school, he was a backup forward on the 1960 Ohio State Buckeyes team that won the NCAA Championship and included Jerry Lucas and John Havlicek, two players who would become Hall of Famers.
The following two NCAA Championship games, in which Knight participated, saw the Buckeyes lose to the Cincinnati Bearcats.
Knight typically didn’t get much playing time because of the Ohio State teams’ star power, but that didn’t stop him from having an impact.
With 1:41 remaining in the 1961 NCAA Championship game, with Cincinnati leading Ohio State, 61-59, Knight entered off the bench.
It has been reported that Knight lettered in baseball and football at Ohio State in addition to basketball; however, Knight is not listed among the school’s official football letter winners. In 1962, Knight earned a degree in government and history.
